We all love to have a clean home, but using harsh chemicals to keep our house clean can be dangerous and harmful to the environment. Luckily, there are so many natural ways to keep your home clean, which means you don’t have to rely on commercial cleaners to make your home shine each week.
And while using natural cleaning solutions to clean the surfaces in your home can be an easy way to reduce the amount of chemicals in your house, you may be worried that natural cleaners won’t be tough enough to keep your floors clean.
These five natural ways to clean your floors will instantly cut through the grime on your home’s flooring without the need to resort to harsh chemical cleaners.
Homemade Floor Cleaner
A combination of white vinegar and rubbing alcohol make up this natural floor cleaner and this is a perfect homemade floor cleaner for mopping.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Two cups hot water
½ cup vinegar
¼ cup rubbing alcohol
1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
Essential Oil – optional
To make your own all-purpose homemade floor cleaner, combine all the ingredients in a mopping bucket and stir slowly to mix everything up.
To make the solution smell better, add five to 10 drops of your favorite essential oils to the mixture before you start stirring. I love adding lemon essential oil. I find it not only smells good, but it also helps remove any sticky spots on my floor. For cleaning, I just buy whatever essential oil seems like a great deal.
After everything is mixed, mop the floors using your favorite mop.
Then, go over the flooring again with a clean mop and a bucket of clean water to rinse the solution away. Finally, allow the floor to air dry or wipe the remaining water away with a clean, dry cloth.
This solution can be used on all types of flooring, including tile, hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and linoleum. The vinegar in this solution is great for disinfecting the floor and the rubbing alcohol ensures you’ll have a streak-free shine when you’re finished mopping.
Spot-Clean Floor Solution
Sometimes, you don’t need to mop the entire floor. If you have a few dirty spots on your floor that need a quick cleaning, mix up some spot-clean floor solution. Here’s what you’ll need:
1 cup water
½ cup vinegar
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
Pour all the ingredients into a spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray the mixture on dirty spots on your floor, then use a wet mop or cloth to wipe away the dirt.
This simple solution works well on all types of flooring to clean up small messes throughout your home.
Deep Clean Floor Solution
For hard floors that need a deep cleaning, consider using this tough natural cleaner. Here’s what you’ll need for a deep cleaning solution:
1 gallon hot water
2 tablespoons washing soda (Borax)
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 ½ teaspoons liquid dish soap
Combine the hot water and washing soda in a bucket. Stir the ingredients together until the washing soda is dissolved. Then, add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
This combination of ingredients works well on most floor types, including tile, laminate, vinyl, and linoleum. Avoid using this mixture on hardwood floors as the washing soda may cause small scratches on the flooring.
This powerhouse cleaner is great for cleaning floors with tough stuck-on grease and grime. The scrubbing power of the washing soda, combined with the grease-fighting power of the vinegar and dish soap are perfect for your toughest floor messes.
Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner
Taking care of your hardwood floors takes a little extra work. But it’s simple to keep them clean using a natural solution. Here’s what you’ll need for your hardwood floor cleaner:
One gallon hot water
¾ cup olive oil
½ cup lemon juice
While mopping your hardwood floors on a daily basis isn’t recommended, cleaning dirty hardwood flooring is easy with this natural solution.
To make your hardwood floor cleaner, mix the water, olive oil, and lemon juice in a mopping bucket. Dip your mop in the solution, then ring out as much moisture as you can before mopping the floors. Using the O-Cedar mop and bucket makes this so easy.
If you see any standing water on your hardwood floors after mopping, be sure to use a dry cloth to soak up the wetness. It’s not recommended to allow your hardwood floors to air dry after mopping because standing water can damage the flooring.
This solution works best on hardwood floors. The olive oil in the mixture will leave your floors with a natural shine and the lemon juice will make your home smell amazing as you clean!
Natural Carpet Cleaner
While most of these cleaners are perfect for scrubbing hard-surface flooring, homes with carpet also need a natural cleaning option. To naturally clean your carpets, here’s what you’ll need:
2 cups hot water
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 cup white vinegar
Combine the hot water and baking soda in a large spray bottle. Place the lid on the bottle and shake slowly to dissolve the baking soda. Slowly add the vinegar, then replace the lid and shake to mix.
To make the mixture smell better, consider adding 15 drops of your favorite essential oil to the mix. This cleaner can be used as a spot treatment for stains or as an overall carpet cleaner.
To spot clean, spray the mixture directly on the stain, saturating the carpet. Blot to remove the stain, then allow the carpet to dry and vacuum the residue away. To clean your entire carpet, spray a thin layer of mixture all over the carpet. Allow to dry completely, then vacuum any residue away.
