The winter months can make your home seem dark and drab. That’s why spring cleaning can be so refreshing!
But if the idea of deep cleaning your entire house stresses you out, consider working with a spring cleaning schedule to help you stay organized. With the help of these guidelines, you can have a clean and clutter-free home in just one week!
Spring Cleaning Supplies
Before you can start deep cleaning your home, you’ll need to gather up few supplies.
Get yourself prepared to clean your house with these tools and supplies.
Boxes or baskets
To help you stay organized while you’re cleaning and decluttering, it’s a good idea to have some empty boxes or baskets on hand. You’ll need at least three boxes: one for items you plan on donating, one for things that need to be put away in a different room, and one for everything that you want to throw away.
Cleaning supplies
In addition to boxes for decluttering, you’ll also need several cleaning supplies to help you along the way.
Place all the supplies you need in a bucket or basket so you have everything within reach when you need it. For deep cleaning, you’ll need:
- Multi-purpose cleaner
- Glass cleaner
- Wood cleaner
- Dish soap
- Floor cleaner
Cleaning tools
On top of cleaning solutions, having a few cleaning tools on hand is also a must. Get yourself ready to start cleaning by grabbing these tools:
- Vacuum
- Mop
- Sponge
- Microfiber cloth
- Bucket
Spring Cleaning Schedule
Day One: Bedrooms
Start your spring cleaning schedule by cleaning your bedrooms. In each of the bedrooms in your home, follow these steps to get the space clean and organized:
- Remove bedding and place the comforter or duvet in the washing machine. Continue washing the rest of the bedding, including pillows, sheets, and bed skirt, as you work.
- Flip the mattress.
- Dust the ceiling and walls, starting at the top and working down.
- Clean the light fixture and fan.
- Wipe down the windowsills, doors, and other trim.
- Clean the windows.
- Dust the blinds and curtain rods.
- Clean or vacuum the curtains. Wipe the baseboards.
- Dust and/or polish the furniture.
- Organize closets and discard unwanted items.
- Dust closet shelves and inside dresser drawers.
- Vacuum the floors, moving furniture as needed.
- Mop floor or shampoo carpet and rugs.
Day Two: Bathrooms
Now that your bedrooms are clean, it’s time to move on to the bathrooms.
Follow the steps in this order to help you move through each bathroom in your house quickly and easily.
- Wash the towels and bathmats.
- Clean out everything from your cabinets and vanity and discard expired and unwanted items.
- Wipe down the shelves and drawers and return everything back in place.
- Apply toilet cleaner to the inside of the bowl and allow to soak.
- Dust the walls and ceiling, working from the top of the room down.
- Wipe the windowsills, doors, and other trim.
- Dust the blinds.
- Clean the windows.
- Wipe down the baseboards.
- Wipe down the outside of the vanity cabinets, countertop, and sink.
- Clean sink hardware.
- Wipe the mirror.
- Clean the bathtub, shower, and surround.
- Clean the showerhead and bathtub hardware.
- Wipe the outside of the toilet and the seat. Scrub the inside of the bowl.
- Sweep the floors.
- Scrub the tile grout.
- Mop the floor.
Day Three: Living room and dining room
Once the bedrooms and bathrooms are clean, you can move on to the gathering areas of your home.
In addition to cleaning the living room and dining room, you may need to spend extra time decluttering the spaces if your family member spend a lot of time in either of these rooms. Follow these steps to get your living areas clean and clutter-free:
- Wash all blankets, slipcovers, pillows, and table linens in each room.
- Clear out clutter and remove items that don’t belong in the rooms.
- Dust the ceiling and walls, starting at the top and working down.
- Dust the light fixture and/or ceiling fan.
- Clean the windowsills, doors, and other woodwork.
- Wash the windows.
- Clean the blinds.
- Vacuum or clean the curtains.
- Remove the cushions from the sofa and chairs and vacuum each piece of furniture.
- Dust and polish wood furniture.
- Dust electronics and wipe down remote controls.
- Clean lamps and lampshades.
- Dust décor.
- Remove dishes from China cabinet. Clean the dishes and wipe down the shelves and doors.
- Polish silver.
- Vacuum floors.
- Mop floors or shampoo rugs or carpet.
Day Four: Laundry room and other household tasks
On your fourth day of cleaning, you’ll take the time to focus on your laundry room.
In addition to cleaning that room of your house, you can also use this day to take care of a few other annual household tasks that need to be accomplished while you’re spring cleaning.
Use this checklist to deep clean your home’s laundry room:
- Remove all laundry from the washer and dryer, fold, and put away.
- Clean the washing machine.
- Wipe down the inside of the dryer.
- Clean out the lint trap and dryer vent.
- Wipe down the outside of the washer and dryer.
- Dust the ceiling and walls.
- Wipe off shelves and declutter, as needed.
- Wipe baseboards.
- Clean windowsills, doors, and other trim.
- Wash windows.
- Vacuum floors.
- Mop floors or shampoo carpet.
- Test and replace smoke alarm batteries.
- Replace air filters.
- Clean registers and vents.
Day Five: Entryway and garage
After focusing your efforts on the living areas of your home, it’s time to move on to the entries and exits in your house.
This cleaning checklist will help you get your entryway and garage clean and organized:
- Declutter tools, sporting equipment, shoes, jackets, and other items in both spaces.
- Wipe the walls and baseboards.
- Clean shelves and storage areas.
- Wipe the door (inside and out).
- Wash windows.
- Clean doormats (inside and out).
- Organize shoes and jackets.
- Vacuum entryway floor.
- Mop floor or shampoo carpet.
- Sweep off porch and walkways outdoors.
- Sweep garage floor.
Day Six: Office and playroom
On day six of your cleaning schedule, head back inside to get your office space and kid’s play areas under control. Use this list of tasks to help you stay on track as you clean and declutter these spots in your house:
- Wipe down the ceiling and walls in both rooms.
- Wipe off the baseboards.
- Clean windowsills, doors, and other trim.
- Dust blinds.
- Vacuum or clean curtains.
- Wash windows.
- Declutter the desk and storage space in the office.
- Dust and polish furniture.
- Clean electronics, keyboard, and mouse.
- Declutter toys in all storage areas and discard unwanted items.
- Wash and sanitize all plastic toys with soap and water.
- Wash stuffed animals and soft toys on the gentle cycle in the washing machine.
- Wipe down storage shelving and bins.
- Reorganize and replace all toys.
- Vacuum floors.
- Mop floors or shampoo carpets and rugs.
Day Seven: Kitchen
We saved the biggest cleaning checklist for last on this spring cleaning schedule – the kitchen.
Once you have all the other rooms in your how spick and span, you can tackle the messes in your kitchen. Follow this checklist to ensure your kitchen looks amazing when you’re finished cleaning.
- Place an oven cleaning solution inside your oven and give it time to soak.
- Wipe down the ceiling and walls, scrubbing stuck-on areas as needed.
- Remove items from your cabinets and wipe down the shelves.
- Sort through everything you take out of the cabinets and discard unwanted items before placing everything back inside.
- Wipe down the outside of the cabinet doors and cabinet tops.
- Remove everything from your refrigerator and wipe down the shelves and drawers.
- Discard old expired food and return everything else back to the refrigerator.
- Transfer the food from your freezer into a cooler.
- Wipe down the shelves and drawers in the freezer.
- Discard all the expired food, then return everything back to the freezer.
- Wipe down the outside and top of the refrigerator, the seal in the doors, and the front of the doors.
- Remove everything from the countertops and clean each item.
- Wipe down the counter and backsplash, then return everything back to the counters.
- Clean the stovetop.
- Clean the microwave inside and out.
- Clean the dishwasher inside and out.
- Scrub the inside of the oven and wipe clean.
- Wipe the range hood.
- Wash all dishes in the sink, then scrub the sink, hardware, and drain.
- Wipe down the baseboards and areas under the cabinets.
- Vacuum the floor.
- Mop the floor.
- Clean rugs or floor mats.
