I don’t know about you, but seeing the excitement in my kids around the holidays is such a joy.
They love everything about the season, the lights, candles, baking cookies together and of course watching family holiday movies together.
Here are some of our favorite Christmas movies to watch as a family together. We love having family movie nights and at this point, with my sons being 6, 8 and 11 we have a fairly easy time finding something to watch that everyone enjoys.
1. A Christmas Story
I don’t know about you, but this movie was on TV the day after Thanksgiving and my sister and I watched it every year. It was never a favorite of mine, but my husband always loved it. So we watched it as a family several years ago and my oldest son really took to this movie. It is now a movie that we watch every year as a family. My kids all watch it several times throughout the season as well.
2. Home Alone
Another classic that my sister and I watched all the time growing up around the holidays. And another movie that my boys all really love.
If you haven’t seen this movie before, it stars McCauley Caulkin as Kevin a 9-year-old boy with a family going to France over the holidays. It is a large family, with extended family staying in their house as they gear up to leave for the holidays. Unfortunately, Kevin is left behind. You can see how a 9-year-old handles being home alone for an extended time.
We actually have a friend whose son decided to boobie trap their house after watching this movie. He was about 4 at the time. If I remember correctly, he decided to start in his mom’s closet with shaving cream in her shoes. hahaha, creating memories. 😉
If you have really young kids that are sensitive, this is not the movie for them. It would have been too scary for my oldest until he was about 6, my youngest was fine watching it around 3-4 though.
3. The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause stars Tim Allen as a divorced Dad. who suddenly finds that he is Santa.
This movie is funny and it’s another that my kid’s all love. There are several sequals to this movie and my kids enjoy watching them all.
4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess is the book that these movies are based on.
Grinch who lives on a mountainside next to a little town called Whoville. The Grinch plans to steal Christmas by stealing gifts and making the people of the town miserable. What follows is a unique, hilarious and exciting adventure your kids will love.
There are two versions of this movie. We (meaning my family) prefer the animated version.
The animated one is very short, about a half an hour, while there is another one with Jim Carrey starring as the Grinch. It is obviously longer and is a lot of fun as well.
5. Elf
If you and your kids haven’t seen Elf yet, make sure you make time this holiday season to do so.
It stars Will Farrel as Buddy the Elf who was adopted by one of Santa’s elves. He grows up in the North Pole at Santa’s workshop but goes on a journey to find his real father in New York City.
There are twists and turns and of course, a happy ending. We always laugh a lot when watching this holiday movie.
6. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
This is a funny movie where Clark is having a family Christmas. Both his parents and his in-laws are coming to stay with his family over the holidays. It is funny (sometimes over the top cheesiness).
Please note that this is rated PG-13
7. I’ll be Home for Christmas
This movie is about a college guy named Jake played by Thomas Taylor Thomas, who is bribed by his father to come home for Christmas. Some other college guys play a trick on him and he ends up stranded in the middle of the desert wearing a Santa costume. He has to figure out how to get home in time for Christmas.
8. Jingle all the way
A rendition from the song with the same name, this is a Christmas classic movie for the kids. This time we meet Arnold Schwarzenegger as he tries to do whatever it takes to get children the toys they want, even if it means breaking a few rules here and there.
9. A Christmas Tree Miracle
A Christmas Tree Miracle is a story of a family who seems to have it all or at least everything materialistic. It turns out they’ve been living beyond their means and things are about to change for them. This is a very heartwarming movie.
10. Prancer
Prancer is a heartfelt movie where an 8-year-old girl who has recently lost her mom nurses a reindeer back to health. She believes this reindeer must be one of Santa’s.
