Trick-or-treating and coordinating the costumes your family wears can be a lot of fun!
When my oldest son was about 3 we did a Toy Story theme.
He was planning on dressing up as Buzz Lightyear. It was really easy to have my husband dress up as Woody and I went as Jessie. We ended up having a Halloween/birthday party to go to right around Halloween and it was a lot of fun to go as a theme.
There are soooo many ideas on different family Halloween costume themes. It’s really easy to expand some themes for larger group sizes or just focus on a smaller set of characters for smaller families. I will say as I’m writing this, many of the popular films are heavy male roles, so you might have to do a little bit more searching to find the perfect theme if there are a lot of females in your group.
Here are just a few of the fun ideas you could do.
He-Man
This is actually the theme my family is playing around with right now for this coming Halloween, but there aren’t too many ready-made costumes available for this. So you would need to be creative and craft to make the costumes.
My youngest son (6) wants to be He-Man, so we are thinking my husband could be Skeletor, I could go as Teela, Oldest can be Orko and my middle son can be Man at Arms. If you have more females in your family, it would be easy to add in characters from She-Ra as well.
Wizard of Oz
I think this is a pretty classic theme for Halloween costumes. There are quite a bit of characters to choose from.
If you have a baby, the baby can go as Toto the dog. Or if you have a dog, your dog can go as Toto.
Other character choices are: Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Lion, the Wicked Witch or Glinda the Good Witch from the North or even a flying monkey.
Superhero Family
Superheroes seem to be more popular now than ever before.
There are a lot of different ways to do a superhero Halloween theme.
Everyone could go as superheroes from the same universe – such as Justice League (which includes the popular Wonder Woman, Superman, Aquaman and Batman) or The Avengers (which includes Spiderman, Thor, Hulk, Ironman)
Or you could easily change this so everyone is dressing as their favorite superhero and who cares if they all belong in the same universe
Willy Wonka
This is one of my kid’s favorite movies (the old version). There are so many ways you could dress up with this theme.
Some fun options are Charlie, Willy Wonka, Veruka Salt as the blueberry after eating too many or an Oompa Loompa.
Star Wars
My two oldest children loved Star Wars The Clone Wars show for a long time. One year they dressed up as Captain Rex and Commander Cody and they also made sure they had the nerf guns that go with these costumes. The costumes were used for a long time with the kids (and they are still used years later) as well as the nerf guns.
Star Wars has so many different episodes/movies to choose from for characters that it should be fairly easy to find the perfect one for each person. Your family can go with some of the classic characters such as Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, etc. You could also go with the just-released movie The Force Awakens characters such as Kylo Ren, Rey, or a Storm Trooper.
The Flintstones
Travel back to the stone age as Fred, Wilma and Pebbles. These are all fun characters to go as. You could also add in Betty, Barney or Bam Bam.
Ghostbusters
Does your family love this movie as much as mine does?
Your family could go with characters from the original movie or the new movie. You can have as many ghostbusters as you want or need and even your dog can be a ghostbuster. There are also other characters family members can be such as Slimer or the Stay Puft.
Remember that anything you can make into a group of characters is easy to turn into a family Halloween costume everyone will love.
